6 Things To Consider Before Changing Hair Color

by

Readers and followers on my Instagram would have probably seen my new hair color. I’ve gone PINK! Pretty drastic change huh? Since 2 years ago, changing hair color has been a yearly thing. Initially, it wasn’t easy even for me to consider adopting ombré. Now, I believe my hair has seen through some drastic color change.

If you’re thinking of changing hair color for the first time or wondering if you should do a drastic color change, I can understand there will be a lot going through your mind. Let me make it easier for you by listing down 6 things to consider before changing hair color.

1. The Color
  • Ways To Style Your Hair To A Wedding

Before hitting the salon, I’m sure you must have browsed through your social media, magazines or maybe read some blogs and a few colors caught your attention. Keep those pictures and view them again a few days later. You will come to a conclusion that one particular color will stand out more than the rest.

Be sure you pick the color when you are at a calm state of mine. Whether it is a major change or subtle change in color, you must be comfortable and confidence enough to carry it for a while. If you are stuck with more than one color to choose, try using this website or download this App on your phone, then compare those colors. You might just find the right shade for yourself.

2. The Trusted Salon

In my opinion, this is one of the most crucial among the 6 things to consider before changing hair color. You would have to make sure this is the trusted salon and stylist to color your hair, in which, it would be permanent for the next few months! Since most of the salons these days have a social media account to showcase their work, take a browse. Look through their previous work and what is their expertise. It is OK to call them up or drop by for a consultation.

My trusted salon is Toni & Guy Bangsar. I’m sure you had seen my color transformation through the years and they had done a great job in changing my hair colors. Most major hair color changes requires a few hours. Especially if it requires lightening. When they changed my color from dark red to orange, it took me 8 hours. So be sure to get your salon’s advise and spare your time for them to do the coloring.

3. Suitable Makeup

It might seem like changing hair color has nothing to do with makeup. Let me tell you that it has everything to do with it! When I changed my hair color from Ombré Aquamarine to Pink, I looked really fair. Pastel colored hair makes my skin tone one shade lighter. So, if I don’t put on any makeup, I would look unhealthily pale.

So the rule of thumb is, the lighter the hair color, the lighter your skin tone would be and the darker the hair color, you will look more tan. Having said that, you don’t have to change your entire makeup kit just to go with the hair color change. My tip would be either getting a concealer 2 shade lighter or darker than your current foundation. Mix the concealer and foundation together and you’ll get the perfect shade.

4. Wardrobe Change

Just like your makeup, you would want a wardrobe that matches your hair. You don’t have to change your wardrobe entirely but just know the trick of mix and match. If you change your hair color from a dark to lighter color, wear darker tops or dresses. Pick lighter shade outfits if you are going from a lighter to darker hair color. This would give you a chance to enhance your hair and let it take centerstage.

Above is a color chart I made for myself when my hair color went from Aquamarine to Pink. I find this guideline useful when I need to mix and match my outfits.

5. Confidence

Pink Hair Don’t Care

This is crucial once you have discussed the color you want with your hairstylist. Know that you would be carrying this color for a while. At least 4-6 months before you outgrow the hair color. You must comfortable with the hair color and have the confidence to carry it. Just like your outfit, once you have that confidence to carry the style, all eyes will be on you.

Be prepared for comments that might not be favorable towards you. Just know that this is your hair and as long as you are happy with it, that is all that matters.

6. Home Care

Last but not least, this is important once you walk out of your salon. Like me, I had my hair bleached and added colors. That can be harsh on the hair but nothing a good home care cannot do. Good looking hair do come with a price. I am aware that my hair do need a lot more TLC from me. Not only do I need to spend more time on home treatment, I also need to spend more money on buying good home care. Olaplex is a good treatment to strengthen the hair. Where else, Kerastasé has some good leave-on conditioner to keep it smooth.

To keep the color from fading quickly, I try to wash my hair only twice a week. I do realize that pastel colors tends to fade faster than darker colors. The good thing is that, a bleached hair doesn’t get too oily even after 3 days. I try to use dry shampoo a lot more. Once a month, I would drop by Toni & Guy Bangsar for a treatment.
