I was first introduced to Toni & Guy through a very dear friend of mine. At first, I was pretty sceptical on trying out a new stylist because I have fear! Questions that go in my head were like, what if the cut isn’t what I wanted? Do I have to live with that hairstyle for weeks or months?! Then again, when I look at their profile and latest collection of hairstyles, I spotted a style called The Instalux and fell in love with it! Next, I called up Toni & Guy’s Bangsar branch and everything was history.

I first walked in and was greeted by a bunch of friendly faces. William, the Stylist Director sat me down and diagnosed my hair. He had a few questions and this was what went on:

William: I would like to know what have you done to your hair.  When was the last time you had a perm?

Me: About 8-10 months ago, I believe. There’s not many curls left, except at the ends.

William: How about color?

Me: I’ve had it bleached about 5 months ago and had it colored.

William: What sort of style are you looking at and what do you have in mind for your hair?

Me: I have The Instalux (like the picture below) in my head. Totally love the color and cut. Does this hair style suits me?

William: There’s a lot going on with your hair right now. You needed the cut for sure, especially the ends so that your hair will look healthy no matter the length. I can totally see the Instalux in you, but probably not as short. I like your hair length right now, but since your hair is on the fine side, we need to do some layering on the inside in order to give your hair the volume you need when you style The Instalux.

Me: I travel quite a bit. Will this be an easy hairstyle to maintain?

William: This will definitely be a great hair style for those who travels a lot, as styling is easy. All you need is a volume gel or cream to give you that volume and the out-of-bed effect. The only challenging part would be the bangs. You would probably need to come in once every fortnight for a trim or if you travel,  allow it to grow longer and sweep it to the side.

Once William was done with cutting my hair, he passed the coloring job over to Rickie. Rickie heads the Color Technician team for Toni & Guy’s Bangsar branch. He knew that I like The Instalux and shared some insight about this style.

Rickie: The main color for The Instalux is violet and red. Violet will be the base and red will be used as highlights.

Me: Will that suit my skin color as I’m Asian and the model in the picture is not.
Rickie: The color will suit you alright, as violet and red are suitable for those with lighter skin tone.

Me: What will you do with my hair to get The Instalux effect?
Rickie: As your hair has been bleached, the violet that I will apply on your hair will turn out to be slightly lighter, comparing to what you see on the model. As for the red highlights, it will be lighter too. Leaning towards pinkish, instead of red. I want your hair to look like it has been colored, but stay healthy at the same time.

Me: When I travel, will it be hard to maintain as I’m unable to visit you for color addition at the roots?
Rickie: Don’t worry about the maintenance. This color is easy to maintain as it isn’t as light comparing to your previous hair color. The current color will blend into the darker roots. Just take note that the color will continue to fade after a few washes so try to use an old towel to dry your hair at the meantime.

After almost 5 hours, my hair is finally done and I walked out a very happy customer. Yes, it might be a long ordeal, but they were very careful and meticulous in their work. I like how they’re very detailed and helped me trust them to deal with my hair for the first time. The color did bleed up to the 5th wash and now it had stopped. I’m definitely going to return some time soon to have my bangs cut again.
